Strike Against the RNC

The Republican National Convention is coming to town Sept. 1-4. We cannot allow business as usual to continue while our city is used to promote the unending occupation of Iraq, the militarization and underfunding of our schools, and attacks on social programs. That's why Youth Against War and Racism is calling for a massive student strike culminating in an antiwar festival and theatrical arrest and mock trial of the war criminals meeting in St. Paul.

GET ACTIVE!
We need volunteers in every school to mobilize, to create giant puppet theater, etc. See Calendar.

HOW to ORGANIZE YOUR SCHOOL
for the STUDENT STRIKE on SEPT. 4

One week from today we aim to bring thousands of students across the Twin Cities out of their classrooms and into the streets to protest the unjust wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and to say NO! to the agenda of the Republican National Convention. We are walking out to end business as usual and to let the world know that the RNC and John McCain does NOT speak for the youth of the Twin Cities!
The strike will occur on the third day of classes for most high schools and colleges, so to ensure a HUGE turnout, we are calling on all student activists to do everything they can to  use the first days of classes to SPREAD THE WORD AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE!
Here are FOUR ESSENTIAL STEPS you can take:

1. Go to the Strike Activist Training!
SUNDAY, Aug. 31st, 5pm @ Bedlam Theatre

*** Learn methods to get a HUGE TURNOUT from your school.
*** Pick up copies of fliers, stickers and posters.
*** Meet and learn from other students organizing in their schools

    ALSO happening SUNDAY:

2. Use Facebook and MySpace
- Go to  http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=22480855317&ref=ts Join the group and message the creator to become one of the Administrators and set up your own event with details specific to your school. Make sure the event is hosted by the Student Strike Group. Invite everyone from your school. Include a link to yawr.org/strike
- Use MySpace send out daily reminders and bullitons. Check out myspace.com/yawrmn


3. Plan transportation for from your school to the Capitol
WALKOUT at 11am Arrive at the Capitol between 11am and 1pm!
- How will you and your classmates get to the Capitol?
- Check out yawr.org/strike for bus schedules from Twin Cities schools (will be up later this evening).
- NOTE: While the festivities and food at the Capitol begins at 12 Noon on Sept. 4th, the main rally won't start until after 1pm.
- Have a plan, figure out how many buses/carpools you will need to take. Have someone in charge of each bus/carpool that knows their way to the capitol. Lead chants and Make Some Noise as you leave your schools Campus.


4. Download and Mass Distribute Fliers
The first two days of school are crucial to letting other students know about the Student Strike on Thursday. Before School, After School, Between Classes - Hand out as many fliers as possible.
- Come Sunday to the Strike Activist Training pick of fliers, stickers, etc.

Bus Schedules For Schools!

Broadway High School

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk to West Broadway and Fremont Ave. N. Bus 14C Bloomington/Cedar Point/ Via Rege will arrive at 11:07am, so arrive at the bus stop as soon as possible. Take the 14 to 6^th and Hennepin Ave, arriving around 11:20 am you will be right by Block E. Wait there for the next bus (94C) and while waiting at 6^th and Hennepin, you can do chants, talk about reasons for walking out, ect. Around 11:28 am the 94C will arrive, you will need to transfer on to that bus. All the 94 buses will be detoured by the capital due to the RNC.  Get off near the capital on Rev. MLK Jr. Blvd.  and walk south the event will be on the south yard of the Capital.

*Make sure that people have bus fare for express ahead of time.

Metropolitan Learning Alliance

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk to MOA Transit Station and Gate D. Bus 54 LTD Stop/St. Paul/Via Airport will arrive at 11:16, so arrive at the stop as soon as possible. Once you get on the 54 bus is detoured it will be driving up toward the capital get off at John Ireland Blvd. and 11th.  You will then walk north bound toward the captial on John Ireland Blvd.

Wellstone International High School

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk to Lake St. W. and Bryant Ave. S. Bus 21A Selby-Lake/St. Paul will arrive at 11:14, so arrive at the stop as soon as possible. The 21A  bus it will be detoured toward the Captial do to the RNC.  You will want to get off the 21A on John Ireland Blvd. and 11th.  You will then walk north bound toward the captial on John Ireland Blvd.

Uptown Academy

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk to Lake St. W. and Bryant Ave. S. Bus 21A Selby-Lake/St. Paul will arrive at 11:14, so arrive at the stop as soon as possible. Once you get on the 21A bus it will be detoured toward the Captial do to the RNC.  You will want to get off the 21A on John Ireland Blvd. and 11th.  You will then walk north bound toward the captial on John Ireland Blvd.

Edison

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk approx. 2 blocks SE on 22nd Ave NE. Bus 10 Downtown/Via Central/Nic-10st will arrive at 11:20 am, so arrive at the stop as soon as possible. Once you get on the 10 bus it will take you to Nicollet Mall and 6th St. S. You will arrive around 11:38 am. Walk toward 6th and the bus stop for the 94 will be on 6th st and the corner of Nicollet by office Max wait there for the next bus.  Around 11:43 am bus 94B Express/St. Paul/Via Capitol will arrive, you will need to transfer on to that bus. Ride the 94B to the capital all 94 buses will be detoured by the capital due to the RNC. Get off at Rev. MLK Jr. Blvd and walk to the South grounds of the capital.

Henry          

Walk out of Class at 11 am and walk up to 44th Ave. N. walk to the nearst bus stop and wait for the 5 the  is expected to arrive at 47th and Osseo at 11:06 am so be prepared for the bus to arrive shortly after 11:06.  Ride the 5 to downtown Minneapolis get off the bus at 8th and Nicollet, from there walk to nicollet mall and take a left head 2 blocks north and take a left at 6th at the corner of 6th and Nicollet by office Max is the 94 bus stop wait for the 94B it will arrive at 11:43 take the 94B to St. Paul.  All 94 bus routes are on detour and run by the Capital.  Get off at Rev. MLK Jr. Blvd. and walk to the south side of the Capital.

North

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk approx. 1 block S on James Ave N. then turn right on Plymouth Ave N. and walk a short distance W on Plymouth Ave N. to James Ave. N. Bus 7A 27 Av S/Lake St STA will arrive at 11:37 am, so arrive at the stop as soon as possible. Once you get on the 7A bus it will take you to 6th St and Hennepin Ave. You will arrive around 11:59 am. Wait there for the next bus.  Around 12:12 pm bus 94B Express/St. Paul/Via Capitol will arrive, you will need to transfer on to that bus. Ride the 94B to the capital all 94 buses will be detoured by the capital due to the RNC. Get off the bus at Rev. MLK Jr. Blvd. and walk to the South grounds of the capital.

Walk outof class at 11am and walk head down 16th ave 3 block to Freemont then head a block north to 17 th ave a South bound 5 buss is expected at Freemont and Broadway at 11:14 am.  You will ride the bus to downtown and get off at 8th and Nicollet at about 11:26 am.  From there take a left on Nicollet walk north on Nicollet to 6th and take a left the bus stop for the 94 will be right there on the corner of 6th and Nicollet right in front of Office Max.  Wait there till 11:43 am the 94B will arive.  Take the 94B to St. Paul get off at Rev. MLK Jr. Blvd. and head south bound to the south yard of the capital.

ROOSEVELT

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk approx. 1 block N on 28th Ave S to 28 Ave. S. and 40 St. E. Bus 22C N Lyndale/Via Dupont-57/BRKLYN CTR will arrive at 11:18 am, so arrive at the stop as soon as possible. Once you get on the 22C bus it will take you to7 St. S. and Nicollet Mall. You will arrive around 11:48 am. Walk a short distance SE on 7th St. S. Then turn left on Nicollet Mall and walk approx. 1 block NE on Nicollet Mall. You will then need to take a left turn on 6^th St. S. and walk a short distance NW on 6^th St. S. to 6^th St. S. and Nicollet Mall. Around 12:00 pm the 94C Express/ St. Paul will arrive and you will need to transfer on to it. Ride the 94C to 10^th St. and Cedar St.  You then will need to walk a short distance NE on 10^th St. E. Take a left on Cedar St. and walk approx. 3 blocks NW on Cedar St. You will then take a left turn on Aurora Ave, which will bring you to the State Capitol.

SOUTH

Walk out of class 11 am and walk approx. 2 blocks N on 19th Ave S. Then take a left turn on Lake St. and walk a short distance W on Lake St. E. That will bring you to Lake St. E. and 19^th Ave S. Bus 21A Shelby-Lake/St. Paul will arrive at 11:35 am, so arrive at the bus stop as soon as possible. Once you get on the 21A it will take you to University Ave. and Snelling Ave. You will arrive around 11:56 am. -need to fix this - just take the 21 to the State Capitol. SOUTHWEST

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk approx. 2 blocks E on 47th St W. Then turn right on Xerxes Ave S. and walk a short distance S on Xerxes Ave S, which will bring you to Xerxes Ave. S. and 47^th St. W. Bus 6U Oak St-Univ/Via Xerxes will arrive at 11:31 am, so arrive at the stop as soon as possible. The 6U will take you to Hennepin Av S & Franklin Ave W. You will arrive around 11:49 am. Wait there for the next bus.  Around 11:58 am bus 114 LTD Stop/U of M will arrive and you will need to transfer on to it. Ride the 114 to Washington Ave SE and Anderson Hall at which you will arrive around 12:03 pm. Wait there for the next bus.  Around 12:08 pm bus 50S LTD Stop/St. Paul/Univ Ave will arrive and you will need to transfer on to it. Ride the 50S to Dr. MLK JR BLVD and the State Capitol The 6 hooks up with the 50 and the 16 - so avoid transferring to the 114-Daniel DiMaggio 8/28/08 1:04 PM

WASHBURN

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk approx. 2 blocks E on 49th St W. then turn right on Nicollet Ave S. and walk a short distance S on Nicollet Ave S. to Nicollet Av S & 49 St E. Bus 18 Downtown will arrive at 11:25 am, so arrive at the stop as soon as possible. Once you get on the 18 bus it will take you to 6th St S. and Nicollet Mall. You will arrive around 11:54 am. Wait there for the next bus.  Around 12:13 pm bus 94B Express/St. Paul/Via Capitol will arrive, you will need to transfer on to that bus. Ride the 94B to Dr. MLK JR BLVD and the State Capitol.

Arlington Senior High School

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk to Rice St. and Nebraska Ave. Bus 62 Rice St/Downtown will arrive at 11:25 am, so arrive at the stop as soon as possible. Once you get on the 62 bus it will take you to Rice St. and Nebraska Ave. You will need to get off there and walk a short distance S on Rice St. Then take a left on University Ave W. and walk approx. 1 block E on University Ave W. Then  turn right on Park St. and walk S on Park St. Walk straight on Rev Dr Mlk Jr Blvd until you reach the State Capitol grounds.

Central Senior High School

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk approx. 4 blocks N on Lexington Pkwy N. Then turn left on University Ave. W. and walk approx. 1 block W on University Ave W. to University Ave and Dunlap/Lexington Pkwy. Bus 16 Univ Av/St. Paul will arrive at 11:41 am. Ride the 16 to Dr. MLK JR BLVD and the State Capitol.

Como Park Senior High School

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk approx. 1 block E on Rose Ave W. Then turn left onto Grotto St N and walk approx 1 block N on Grotto St N. Then turn right on Maryland Ave W and Walk a short distance E on Maryland Ave W to Maryland Ave and Grotto St. Bus 3A Como Av/DWTN St Paul/Via Mryland will arrive at 11:49 am, so arrive at the stop as soon as possible. Once you get on the 3A bus it will take you to Rice St. and University Ave. You will need to get off there and walk a short distance S on Rice St. Then take a left on University Ave W. and walk approx. 1 block E on University Ave W.  until you reach Rev Dr Mlk Jr Blvd then you walk down it until you reach the State Capitol.

Harding Senior High School

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk approx. 1 block E on 6^th St E. Turn right onto Germain and walk approx 2 blocks S on Germain St. Then turn left on 3^rd St. E and walk a short distance E on Maryland Ave W to3rd St E and Germain St. Bus 63A Grand Av/St Thomas will arrive at 11:31 am. Take the 63A to the State Capitol.

Highland Park Senior High School

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk to approx. 1 block N on Snelling Ave N. Then walk straight on Como Ave to Sb Snelling Ave N. and walk approx. 2 blocks N on Como Ave To Sb Snelling Ave N and turn right on Como Ave. Then walk a short distance E on Como Ave. to Como Ave and Snelling Sb Ramp. Bus 3A Como Av/DWTN St Paul/Via Mryland will arrive at 11:41 am, so arrive at the bus stop as soon as possible. Once you get on the 3A it will take you to Rice St. and University Ave. You will need to get off there and walk a short distance S on Rice St. Then take a left on University Ave W. and walk approx. 1 block E on University Ave W.  Until you reach Rev Dr Mlk Jr Blvd then you walk down it until you reach the State Capitol.


Humboldt Senior High School

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk a short distance W on Baker St W and turn right on Hall Ave. Then walk approx 4 blocks N on Hall Ave and turn right on Winifred St W. Walk approx 1 block E on Winifred St W to Winifred St W and Humboldt Ave S. Bus 67A Minnehaha/Prior-Univ/Via Thompson will arrive at 12:06 pm. Once you get on the 67A it will take you to Rice St. and University Ave. You will need to get off there and walk a short distance S on Rice St. Then take a left on University Ave W. and walk approx. 1 block E on University Ave W.  until you reach Rev Dr Mlk Jr Blvd then you walk down it until you reach the State Capitol.


Johnson Senior High School

Walk out of class at 11 am and walk to Arcade St. and Ivy Ave. Bus 61 Henn-Larp/DWTN St Paul/Via Arcade will arrive at 11:55 am. Once you get on the 61 it will take you to 6th St and Wabasha St. You will arrive around 12:13 pm. Wait there for the next bus. Around 12:19 pm the 3B Como-Front/DWTN St Paul/To Hennepin will arrive, you will need to transfer on to that bus. Ride the 3B to Rice St. and University Ave. You will need to get off there and walk a short distance S on Rice St. Then take a left on University Ave W. and walk approx. 1 block E on University Ave W.  Until you reach Rev Dr Mlk Jr Blvd then you walk down it until you reach the State Capitol.
